Here’s the formula we’ve used for decades to guide ourselves and our students:
Your Gifts + Improving the World = Your Life Purpose
This isn’t a rigid formula but a powerful compass that points you toward your deeper calling.
Your gifts are the talents and abilities that feel natural to you. They are the things you enjoy doing — the activities that make you lose track of time.
Examples of gifts might include:
Spend time reflecting: What do I do that feels easy, joyful, and meaningful? These gifts are clues to your life purpose.
Your life purpose is about more than just personal fulfillment — it’s about contribution. Ask yourself: “If I could make the world better, what kind of world would I want to live in?”
Do you want to make the world more:
Choose one or two qualities that truly inspire you. For example, my purpose is to create a world that is more loving and creative.
Once you’ve identified your gifts and your vision for the world, combine them into a statement:“I use my gifts of coaching, healing, and teaching to help create a more loving and creative world.”
This statement becomes a daily guide for your decisions and actions.

Step 1: Identify Your Unique Gifts
Your gifts are the talents and abilities that feel natural to you. They are the things you enjoy doing — the activities that make you lose track of time.
Examples of gifts might include:
- Teaching and coaching – helping others grow and succeed
- Research and discovery – finding answers and solving problems
- Creativity and art – expressing beauty and inspiration
- Leadership and service – guiding teams or communities
- Communication and writing – sharing ideas that uplift others

Step 2: Decide How You Want to Improve the World
Your life purpose is about more than just personal fulfillment — it’s about contribution. Ask yourself: “If I could make the world better, what kind of world would I want to live in?”
Do you want to make the world more:
- Loving
- Peaceful
- Creative
- Collaborative
- Prosperous
Choose one or two qualities that truly inspire you. For example, my purpose is to create a world that is more loving and creative.

Once you’ve identified your gifts and your vision for the world, combine them into a statement:“I use my gifts of coaching, healing, and teaching to help create a more loving and creative world.”
